With its home base in Alexander City, Alabama, the Russell Corporation makes athletic uniforms, knit active wear, licensed athletic apparel and socks under the brands Russell Athletic, Jerzees and Cross Creek. They also produce the classic American sportswear brands Spalding, Brooks and Bike.
The company was founded in 1902 by Benjamin Russell who bought 6 knitting machines and ran the factory on steam power. By 1912, the company was spinning and bleaching its own yarn, producing goods and within the next 15 years, Russell was a vertically integrated company from fiber to yarn.
During the 1930s, the company expanded its production to include the manufacture of athletic uniforms, after Russell’s invention of the sweatshirt and its subsequent popularity among athletes. This move took Russell in a new direction and sealed the identity of the company as it is known today.
