Abercrombie & Fitch is a fashionable casual-wear retailer in the United States with over 300 locations. The brand is synonymous with quintessential American youth and has been described as “neo-preppy”. The company is well-known by the public through their trademarks “Casual Luxury” and the “A&F Moose.” A&F’s most popular items include printed t-shirts and sweatshirts, jeans and casual pants.
Abercrombie & Fitch was founded New York City in 1892 by David Abercrombie as an excursion and sporting goods outfitter. One of their early regular customers was a lawyer named Ezra Fitch, who later partnered with the founder. Together in 1904, the two established the company under the name it is known by today.
Other early well-known customers included President Theodore Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Ernest Hemmingway, John Steinbeck and Katherine Hepburn. The company also outfitted Charles Lindbergh for his record-breaking first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. In those days, well-outfitted outdoorsmen were referred to as “Abercrombie & Fitchermen.”
In 1988, the company was purchased by The Limited, Inc., who changed the sporting outfitter’s image into the fashion youth brand it is known as today.
