Western shirts are an authentic piece of American clothing. Western shirts have V-shaped yokes in the front and back, front breast pockets, snap buttons and a top sewn button. On most shirts, the snaps are made of a white pearlized material. Many Western shirts also have embroidered details on the front and back yokes.
Smiley pockets are a common feature of Western shirt pockets that are shaped like an arch with arrows at each end. This creates a "smile" pattern. Straight arrow pockets are also common on Western shirts, which are similar but straight in shape. Simpler styles of breast pockets are single or double saw tooth pockets which have snap button closures.
The Western shirt was originally designed in the 19th century as a work shirt for people of the American West, but as time has gone by, the origins of the shirt becomes harder to reconstruct. However, country and Western music stars help to keep alive the traditional look, as do the ranchers of the West.
Some of the most elaborate shirts have been created by Western tailors such as Nudie Cohn and Manuel. Sought-after brands include Ely Cattleman, Roper, Karman, Ely Plains, Rustler, H-bar-C, Rockmount Ranch Wear, Miller, Plains, Scully, Wrangler, Larry Mahan, Lee, Levi’s, Shepler’s, Ely Cattleman and Panhandle Slim.
