Flannel shirts are made of a napped cotton fabric that gains softness over time by wearing and washing. They are almost always long-sleeve and can be in a traditional cut, jacket-style or with Western tailoring. These days, the flannel shirt is fashionable with many diverse groups including rappers, rockabillies, grunge, rock and metal music fans, outdoorsmen, skateboarders and snowboarders.
The Seattle-based Grunge fashion of the 1990s, with flannel shirts as part of the look, took inspiration from the traditional wear of workers of the Northwest. Jonathan Poneman of the band Sub Pop accurately described flannel shirts as “durable and kind of timeless.” Throughout America “Flannel Fridays” are often celebrated at organizations, workplaces and clubs where everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite flannel shirt.
