School varsity sweaters first appeared in the late 1800‘s, when high school and college athletes began wearing them in team colors with the first letter of the school sewn onto the front.
Both male and female cheerleaders have worn school varsity sweaters since the early 1900s. Over the years, the sweaters have changed, as has their role as part of cheerleader uniforms. In the 1960s, this included short sleeve sweaters, and in the 1970s more athletic elements and designs with stripes, V-necks and turtlenecks were introduced.
